Competition Rules

The following rules are established to uphold the sanctity of the Holy Quran, ensure the safety of all attendees, and protect the fairness and integrity of the Annur Quran Competition.

  • Participants must arrive 15-minutes before their scheduled slots; late arrivals may forfeit their turn.
  • Follow all instructions from competition volunteers and the judging panel with respect and promptness.
  • Proper Islamic dress code and adab (etiquette) must be maintained at all times within the masjid premises.
  • All decisions made by the Judges are final and non-negotiable.

Judging & Grading Criteria

  • Tajweed: Mastery of makharij (points of articulation) and proper application of rules such as ghunnah, ikhfa, idgham, and qalqalah.
  • Accuracy: Evaluation of memorization errors, types of mistakes, and the ability to self-correct and continue smoothly.
  • Fluency & Flow: The cadence and rhythm of recitation, maintaining a consistent pace without rushing or excessive pauses.
  • Adaa & Adab: Displaying humility, proper breath control, and a tone appropriate for the reverence of the Quran.
  • Overall Impression: General readiness for the level, confidence, and consistency throughout the entire performance.

Open to NorCal Residents Only

The Annur Quran Competition is exclusively open to residents of Northern California (NorCal). Physical presence during the final round is mandatory, and proof of address (such as a utility bill or ID) may be requested at registration or check-in to ensure eligibility requirement is met.

Integrity & Honesty: Faking your age, level, or residence is strictly forbidden. Any participant found misrepresenting their details will face immediate disqualification from the current event and may be barred from all future Annur Quran Competitions. Proof of residency in Northern California is required, and levels may be adjusted based on total registrations.

Progression Rules

Past 1st place winners must move up to the next level.

Past 2nd and 3rd place winners may stay in the same level if they choose.

Grading Criteria

Judges will use a specific grading criteria to score participants. Judges will submit scores and will not necessarily track who did better than the others. The results will be calculated, and winners will be determined based on those scores. There will be no negotiating of the results. Results of the competition are considered final. Discussion of scores will not be shared with any participant.

Memorization 80%
Mistakes, hesitation, long pauses

Correct Recitation 15%
Tajweed, incorrect stopping and starting (waqf & ibtida), makhārij

Performance 5%
Confidence, tone, clarity, voice control

The organizers reserve the right to remove any participant whose behavior harms the safety, fairness, or spiritual environment of the competition.
